What is Happiness?
The psychological definition of happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being which can be defined by, among others, positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. However, it is believed that the concept of happiness is so vast that its definition cannot be restricted by the boundaries of words. It is the most subjective concept in the entire human history because each person in the world will have their own reason for happiness.
According to Aristotle,
“Happiness is the only thing that humans desire for its own sake, unlike riches, honor, health or friendship and that humans always sought riches, or honor, or health not only for their own sake but also in order to be happy”.
We all have an eventual tendency to seek happiness from wherever we can and whatever it takes us to achieve it. We observe people around us who are following their passions, making friends, falling in love, buying things they like, watching movies, reading books, traveling the world, writing stories, helping others and so many other activities that make them feel happy and that ensures their overall well-being. Therefore, it can be concluded that a happy mental state is the reflection of an individual’s overall well-being.
The Wrong Judgment
You must be wondering what judgment has to do with happiness. A small tale illustrates this very well,
An eager student once asks his teacher,
“What is the secret to attaining happiness?”
The teacher replies, “The secret of happiness is a good judgment”.
The student again asks, “But how do we attain good judgment?”
“From experience,” answered the teacher.
The student asks again, “But how do we attain experience?”
“From bad judgment”, says the teacher.
The judgment here implies making choices or choosing the sources of our happiness. We attach the idea of happiness with people, places, events or objects and when what we love is no more with us, we feel scattered and sad. What we need to understand here is that there is nothing wrong in seeking happiness in any of the above things but using them to determine our happiness will disappoint us because in this case, we are seeking happiness from external and unbalanced sources instead of within ourselves. That’s where happiness truly comes from.
The Happiness Test
Here are some signs that you are indeed happy and not just comfortable with something that you think is making you happy.
- Do you make an effort to be happy while you are going through tough times? If you do then you are happier than you think.
- Do you always try to surround yourself with happy people? If yes then you are happy from inside and that is the reason you want to attract happy people.
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” — Jim Rohn
- Are you content with what you are? If yes then know that you are happy. However, if you always complain about your physical appearance, your talent, your background and everything that makes you ‘you’ then you are not really happy. Happiness comes with happily accepting who you actually are without having the fear of being judged by others.
- Do you take care of yourself regardless of what the situation around you is? If yes then you are truly happy because you prioritize your well-being over everything that keeps you healthy and fit. A healthy body is the best reflection of a happy mind.
- Do you always reach out for help when someone needs you? If yes then you are indeed happy because you want to spread your happiness everywhere.
- Do you never get disappointed by setbacks and continue to fight your battle? If yes then you are among the happiest people because happy people never let negative energy and feelings harm themselves. Even if negativity strikes them, they know how to fight back.
- Do you quickly get upset by others opinions and hesitate to speak up for yourself? If yes then you are not really happy because happy people are comfortable with themselves and they love speaking about what they think and never feel bad after hearing another person’s opinion.
These are some of the major indications of true happiness. If you have now figured out that you are not really happy then here’s the solution for you.
How Can we Find Real Happiness?
Happiness is a vast concept. Everyone will have their own pursuit and source of happiness. However, as humans, we all have one thing in common among the constituent of our existence which is energy and energy has a strong affiliation with our mind, body, and soul. Energy controls your emotions, reactions and thoughts. It controls what keeps you calm and happy and what makes you most violent, angry or cruel. Some of us know how to utilize this energy for our good, some know, yet choose to ignore and some are completely unaware. Here are ways in which you can attain true happiness in your life.
Let go of Attachments
“Letting go gives us freedom and freedom is the only condition for happiness.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh
Attachment is often confused with love. However, an attachment is actually our emotional dependence on the things we love. We feel that if we lose what we love, we will not survive. This is what gives rise to the biggest reason for unhappiness. Letting go of attachment is basically pulling ourselves out of this emotional dependence and knowing that we have the choice to decide what makes us happy and even if we lose what we love, we can choose to be happy.
Be a Child
Being a child does not mean you have to react like a child in every situation. It simply means that you need to think like a child when you come across an unfavorable situation and then accordingly react in a way that does not harm you. For instance, if you have lost your job, you need to think that what would be the reaction or question of a child if they are told that they cannot do a particular thing (this is how you compare your job with a task given to them).
There are few more ‘Be a Child’ approaches where you might really have to react like a child such as watching cartoons, animated movies, Being stubborn for something you want, fighting for your favorite thing (here maybe your job) and many more. It is absolutely okay if reacting like a child makes you happy.
The less you talk about others the more time you get to talk about yourself. The less you interfere in other’s lives, the more you improve yours. People who are always searching for paparazzi on the web comes under the similar category. If you spend more time in checking what is happening in other people’s lives, you will not have the time to look at your own life and you will never be really happy.
Give More Time to Yourself
Giving time to yourself includes everything you do for yourself without harming others. It includes several activities such as eating healthy, eating on time, exercising regularly, putting in the effort in making yourself look good, taking the time to visit your favorite places once in a week or month, and many more.
It is a proven fact that crying releases stress. It is okay to cry and if you cannot cry in front of people then you must take the time and cry alone. You can have a nice conversation to yourself about everything you have on your mind standing right in front of a mirror. It works magically as it lets the negative energy and stuck emotions go out of your body in the form of tears leaving all the positive energy and happiness inside you.
Meditation is the most helpful technique to relax your mind, the body as well as the soul.
